Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity, hopefully a name that most have already heard, is a worldwide non-profit with the mission of providing safe, reliable housing for those in need. The group itself is a Christian ministry, but Habitat serves to create new homes and renovate existing ones for people of all different backgrounds. Founded in 1976, the organization has already provided over 400,000 homes for 2 million people, and the building never seems to end. For more information, feel free to visit their website: www.habitat.org.

Yspaniola

Yspaniola

Yspaniola is a young organization full of incredibly passionate people serving those living in historically marginalized batey communities in the Dominican Republic. With a specific focus on literacy, scholarships, individual empowerment, and community development, Yspaniola helps many who aspire to reach for a better future, as I witnessed firsthand on a recent trip to see the work they were doing on the ground. I strongly encourage anyone who's interested to go to their website for more information - www.yspaniola.org - and also to consider a service trip of your own in the future!

Project HOPE

Project HOPE

Project HOPE (Health Opportunities for People Everywhere) is an international organization focused on health care, especially the prevention of diseases in developing countries, the education of parents regarding their children's well-being, and the training of health professionals who will continue spreading the group's work in the future. The organization actually began with the first peacetime hospital ship, the SS Hope, which was converted from a US Navy vessel and retired in 1974. More recently, Project HOPE has begun establishing village health banks to give women loans and educate them about how they can promote the health of loved ones in their communities. To learn more about the organization, see their website: www.projecthope.org

Seeds of Peace

Seeds of Peace

Seeds of Peace, founded in 1993, centers around bringing together young people from areas of conflict with the hope that one day their positive experiences and relationships will lead the world closer to peace. Currently the main focus of the program is on the Middle East and South Asia, but the network formed since the program's start now includes over 4,300 people from all over the world. The organization's goals culminate each summer in an annual camp that encourages bonding and dialogue between these young leaders, and year-round follow ups continue to cement the relationships that they have formed. See more at the Seeds of Peace website: www.seedsofpeace.org.
